List of therms» Benzine

Benzine, or V.M. & P. naphtha, as it is sometimes named, is an aromatic hydrocarbon produced by fractioning petroleum. It is a colorless solvent with a mild odor. Benzine should not be confused with benzene, which is a weaker hydrocarbon ring compound. evaporates rapidly, and, because of its excellent capacity to dissolve grease, it is employed as a corrective solution for lithographic drawings.

Drawings on stones may be corrected before etching by washing out the offending area with benzine. Brushes, cotton swabs, or clean soft cloths may be used to carry the liquid. Repeated applications of the solvent are required to ensure its penetration into the printing surface. All traces of fatty drawing deposit must be destroyed. Each application of the solvent should be removed with small pieces of clean blotting paper or cotton swabs so that the surrounding areas of work will not be contaminated by the residue. Since benzine evaporates rapidly, the new drawing may proceed immediately over the dried areas that have been deleted.
